| Short history of perfume |
 |
|
 |
Perfume was first being used for clearing the air or welcoming the gods
in early Egyptian ceremonies.
The ways in which they used perfume
at this time was burning long stems of perfumed wood and bushes in which
we know today as incense they also used soap like material for application of
perfumed oils and scents that we know today as balm or powdered perfume.
These Perfumes were applied to the skin for mostly medical purposes although
there are facts to prove that they were used for cosmetic purposes as well as
cleansing ceremonies.
The use of perfume then spread
to the outer world such Rome and the Middle East.
Perfume as we had known it
up until this point seemed to decline at the fall of the Roman Empire.
Somewhere around the Twelve century the trade in the world picked up and thus
perfume was traded once more.
Perfume took off with great speed in the 17th century and a trade was
born the "perfume
makers" the use of perfume in France accelerated and was used in the
kings castle to perfume clothes, furniture, and his skin daily.
The eighteenth century Eau de Cologne was first introduced with its blend
of lemon and rosemary and a touch of bergamot this new blend of perfume
was used in the preparation of bath water, clothes and even eaten on sugar, mouthwash
and mixed with wine and so on.
The Perfume bottles or containers in the late 17th early 18th century
were as widely used as the fragrances
themselves sponges were used as well as cloths and with the opening of the Baccarat
glass factory in the late 17th century the perfume
bottle was born and opened a new door towards the world of perfume that
we know today.
The start of the 19th century proved to be the turn of the industrial world and
with perfume and science being combined it opened the door to the perfume
we know of today. Perfume
became ever increasingly popular and people began opening up to luxury items and
thus Perfume became
even more popular.
The town of Grasse in Province became the largest center of production for the orange fields and jasmine.
Paris became the epicenter of the perfume world and perfume
designers such as Houbigant, Guerlain, Roger & gallet all established themselves
through the French perfume
connection.
Bottling of the perfume soon became as important as the perfume
itself.
Guerlain began contracting Lalique to produce bottles for them as well as other
well respected names in the perfume world, Baccarat crystal produced
a number of collectible bottles for Guerlain
and the famous Brosse glass company produced the Chanel #5 bottle as well as the
Arpege bottle by
Lanvin.
Adehydes were first used in perfume by Ernest Beaux the creator of the famous
perfume Chanel #5 by Chanel.
This fragrance
was first created in 1921 and was named Chanel #5 as it was the fifth perfume
presented to Miss Chanel. |
