Worth History
Worth Charles Fredrick started work in the fashion business working for Swan
and edgar at the age of 13. He left for Paris before he was 20 and later married
there.
He started making silk coats and shawls for Maison Gagelin where he persuaded
Gagelin to open a dress department which was a huge succsess.
Worth being the first person to sign his work realised that perfection must
be acheived with technical perfection.
Inspired by his wife worth designed her dresses which attracted the attention
of Gagelin customers and led to sales. He was made a partner in the firm in
1851 after the exhibition in Crystal Palace where gagelins included worths dresses
Worth set up his own "maison de couture" at No. 7, rue de la Paix
in 1858 becoming Paris first true couture house.
